![]() ![]() Highland beef is ideal for today’s health-conscious consumer. ![]() The Highland breed is well suited for less than ideal pasture land. They also adapt well to warmer climates with successful herds as far south as Texas and Georgia. They are raised as far north as Alaska and the Scandinavian countries. Highland cattle are found throughout North America, as well as in Europe, Australia and South America. With the ability to thrive in less than ideal circumstances, outstanding mothering instincts, longevity, and very low calf mortality, they are the type of beef animal in high demand for today’s beef market. Their heavy coat and thick hide insulates them from harsh weather. Thriving more than a thousand years in the rugged remote highlands of Scotland before coming to the United States, these cattle enjoy cold weather and snow without need for much in the way of shelter or feed supplements. Highland cattle are quiet, gentle, and easily halter-trained, making them ideal as pets or show animals. Colors are red, black, dun (brown), white, silver, and yellow. They are picturesque animals easily identified by long forelocks, curved horns, and distinctive eyelashes. We are keeping her as a replacement heifer and look forward to pairing her with WL King when she comes of age to breed.Highland cattle, often called Scottish Highlanders, always draw a crowd. Lucy is dark red and full of energy and is growing at a nice rate, picture was taken December 18th, at 9 months of age. We have been anxiously awaiting this pairing and it has not disappointed. This is Ruthie's second calf and she has proven to have excellent maternal traits that we hope pass onto Lucy. Magic's Dam's line have said to have tight udders, small teats, have 50-60 pound calves unaided, and their calves nurse unassisted almost immediately. Magic was a planned breeding for the purpose of spreading the incredible Maternal traits of his dams line and superior maternal traits of his sire throughout his progeny. Magic is a calm bull with Correct and Excellent Level and Straight top line, strong Muscular neck, Low Wide horn set, Broad short head, Bushy Forelock down to his muzzle, And a Thick Slightly Wavy coat. He exhibits the proud traits of the Scottish Highland Cattle Standard. Magic won first place in a People's Choice for favorite sires contest. Magic comes from Big Ridge Highland Cattle farm out of North Carolina. Lucy Wee Lass is sired by BR Voodoo Magic. Mellisa has had 4 Dun calves and 2 black calf. Her black color is from sire HI Oscar 03. Her Sire HI Oscar-03 has had many progeny recognized in the show ring and his semen is being used by many breeders. The long line of Mellisa`s raised at Dundonald is definite evidence of the maternal component of the Highlands. Molly will be for sale at weaning age in September 2023. So far this calf is showing the demeanor of her sire in being the most gentle calf we have had to date. Molly is the first calf sired by our bull WL King. ![]() She had a dun heifer calf that we named Molly. Mellisa had her 6th calf for us on February 27th 2023. Her fine Highland dam is an impact dam and has delivered five healthy calves in 62 months and has ideal udder structure and also has excellent disposition. She performed well in the show ring while at Dundonald. Mellisa comes from the prestigious Dundonald Highland Farm. Mellisa carries her head high and moves about the pasture with a purpose. Mellisa is the leader of our fold and enjoys interacting and engaging with her people. The picture was taken Sept 30th with King being almost 18 months old. We have had our other three cows exposed to King for fall calves scheduled for Sept/Oct 2023. Update King's first calf was born February 27th, Molly came in weighing 63lbs and is a dun heifer calf who is our most gentle calf yet. King was just 13 months old at conception. We have our first confirmed WL King calf on the way with Mellisa Dubh-Dundonald. He is showing an excellent temperament and a very calm and docile demeanor. King is the first bull brought into HRE as a prospect bull and future Herd Sire. Georgia has passed on to King a very correct and proportional frame to go with his strong hooves and legs. Georgia’s Dam, Prairie Grass Hills Sunsong is an impact dam sired by the past Canadian National Champion bull Du Boise Lecoq. King’s Dam is WL Georgia, Georgia is the daughter of Trafalgar Victor, who was a Grand Champion at the Denver stock show, and sired by the great Sunset Limited Edition. Genesis is a Striking Silver Bull whose semen straws sold for $550 a piece and a young cow bred to Genesis sold for $25,000 in the March 2021 North Central Highland Regional Association auction. King is the first bull calf sired by the highly sought after WL Genesis of Windland Flats Farms. ![]()
